Several cities have expressed interest in a 'greener' black cab
The manufacturer of the iconic London black cab has signed a deal to design and build a battery-powered taxi with no carbon emissions. (...)

Several cities have expressed interest in a 'greener' black cab

The manufacturer of the iconic London black cab has signed a deal to design and build a battery-powered taxi with no carbon emissions.

Manganese Bronze says the car will have a top speed of 50 miles per hour and a range of 100km on each battery charge, costing about 4p per mile to run.

It will work with electric vehicles specialist Tanfield Group, with the car built in the UK and launched in 2009.

The joint venture follows interest from several cities keen to cut emissions.

But the higher cost of buying the taxi means it is only likely to take a small part of the market, Manganese says.

'Significant savings'

Manganese's most recent model, the TX4, costs between £28,000 and £33,000.

The cost of the batteries means the zero-emission version will cost more than this, though no price tag has yet been put on it.

Savings over the lifetime of the vehicle would be "significant" said Mark Fryer, Manganese's group finance and business development director.

But he conceded that the higher sale price made putting the commercial case for the new vehicles "more difficult".

"I do not think we will see a significant substitute impact unless there is change in regulations," he said.

"This will be something for a small group of drivers."

Downturn impact

Mr Fryer added that Manganese had been approached by several cities - including some in Scandinavia - that were interested in using the existing diesel-powered black cabs, but felt that the emission levels were too high.

Later this year Manganese Bronze will begin manufacturing the black cab in Shanghai in a deal with Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely.

Hong Kong already has London taxis which were made elsewhere and shipped to the territory.

Last week, Manganese Bronze warned that sales so far this year had been affected by the uncertainty which has swept through London's financial market.

Twelve determined climbers recently took on the tough Three Peaks Challenge for the Paul O’Gorman Leukemia Research centre and Cab Direct was there to lend a helping hand. (...)

Twelve determined climbers recently took on the tough Three Peaks Challenge for the Paul O’Gorman Leukemia Research centre and Cab Direct was there to lend a helping hand.
The National Three Peaks Challenge is steadily becoming a well-known phrase amongst the more adventurous. It involves climbing the 3 highest mountains in the UK within 24 hours. The steep peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon total a staggering 11,180 vertical feet and climbers are against the clock!
Matt Sinclair, the team leader of the group was diagnosed with the rare form of cancer, Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in 2005 and wanted to complete the challenge for the University of Glasgow Trust for the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre.
The £3 million centre, based at Glasgow University campus, was opened in May this year and provides advanced facilities and equipment for clinicians and researchers to translate laboratory findings into new treatments for leukaemia patients.
The group had planned their trip for the 21st of June this year but were having problems sourcing suitable transport for the event. Allied Vehicles, Cab Direct’s parent company, saved the day and not only provided one of their accessible minibuses printed with impressive graphics, but also an enthusiastic driver, Sales Director Peter Facenna.
The group left for the Scottish Highlands on the 21st of June as planned and began their climb of Ben Nevis at 4pm before making their journey to England, commencing their climb of Scafell at 3am. Braving the treacherous rain and gale force winds of 65mph the group just managed to reach Wales and take on Snowdon with the last man finishing with just minutes to spare!
The team returned home blistered and bruised but thankfully no serious injuries were sustained during the trip. The target for the challenge was to raise £6000 for the Paul O’Gorman Centre but the target was smashed with a total of £15,750 being raised between the group.

Commenting on the challenge Matt Sinclair said: “I’m very glad that we took on this tough challenge and made it. My legs certainly felt pain for the following week but because of this challenge, £15,750 will now go to the new Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Facility in Scotland, where people with Leukaemia all over the world will benefit. I would like to thank Peter and Cab Direct as without them we couldn’t have done it.”
Cab Direct were delighted that they could help out the group. Sales Director Peter Facenna commented: “Driving the climbers around for long hours was tough and the weather certainly took its toll on all of us but myself and Cab Direct were delighted to support Matt and the team for such a worthy cause. Well done to all who took part!”
Cab Direct supplied the jumbo Ford Transit minibus with tailgate for the challenge which is just one of many vehicles available from their extensive accessible range.

Russell Brigden from Chelmsford is the proud owner of the new Peugeot E7 SE from Cab Direct and is delighted with his choice. Russell, who opted for the long wheelbase model comments: “I love the new style E7. How the taxi looks is important and for me the new body shape is just excellent.”

And not only does New E7 look the part, comfort levels are second to none too as Russell has noticed. He says: “The driver comfort is superb. The adjustable seat really does make a difference - with the height and tilt adjustments and additional lumbar support you can get the seat exactly as you want it. I find I don’t end my shift feeling as tired.”

Russell is also impressed with New E7’s space. Today’s passengers often come with plenty of luggage and being able to accommodate this is crucial for the modern day driver. That’s why New E7 brings you an amazing 70% more luggage capacity. Even better, the celebrated EasySlide™ rear seat allows you to create even more space for loading cases out of the way. And now with the option of the E7 plus, the long wheelbase model offering even greater room, you are sure to be able to cater for every fare. Russell says: “The space is phenomenal – really excellent for airport runs. And my customers have noticed it too. I’ve had lots of positive feedback.”

Russell, who previously owed a TX11, also finds the E7 to be first class in terms of affordability. He explains: “I do a combination of town and urban driving and economy wise, the E7 is much better than the TX11. It’s unbelievable – the E7 is much bigger and yet it’s far more economical. And with the larger tank it’s a win win situation all round - not only do you get more to the gallon but you need to fill up even less. It’s ideal for me and really great value for money.”

Russell couldn’t be happier with his new taxi and is seeing a lot of green eyes from other drivers and his area. And he is only too happy to recommend the E7. Not only that, he adds: I was very pleased with the speed of delivery. The service from Cab Direct has been excellent.”

Why not find out for yourself?

Liverpool cabbies were left bewildered at the North West Taxi & Private Hire Exhibition in the city last weekend. Visitors to the Cab Direct stand struggled to understand why Liverpool City Council’s Licensing Committee continues to block the way for drivers wanting to use the modern Peugeot E7 Hackney Carriage, despite the fact it operates successfully in 95% of UK towns and cities.

Promoted to raise funds for the annual taxi driver’s outing for underprivileged children, the show was well organised and attended by drivers from across Merseyside. Yet while operators in boroughs such as The Wirral, Sefton and Wigan were able to go ahead and place orders for the modern E7, cabbies operating in the city centre were left asking “Why on earth can’t we have this up-to-date vehicle in Liverpool?”

It’s the same question put to the Council’s Licensing Committee earlier this year by Glasgow manufacturer Cab Direct, supported by more than 300 Liverpool taxi drivers and by local wheelchair users. The Council’s refusal to grant the E7 a Hackney Carriage Licence is currently being challenged through the courts.

Cab Direct’s Donald Pow, who was at the event, commented: “It’s ironic, to say the least, that drivers kept asking us ‘when will I be able to buy one of these cabs?’. Clearly we’d love to able to answer that but for whatever reason, we still can’t sell our purpose-built, safely accessible taxi here in Liverpool”.

Cabbies were genuinely impressed by the modern comfort, storage and safety features the E7 provides. Many drivers reported how angered and frustrated they felt by the lack of choice of vehicle available to them in the city, they can currently only opt for the old-style TX4 taxi. The Peugeot E7 from Cab Direct also offers taxi operators a lower purchase price, superior fuel economy, longer service intervals and reduced CO2 emissions.

<itunes:summary>Liverpool cabbies were left bewildered at the North West Taxi & Private Hire Exhibition in the city last weekend. Yet while operators in boroughs such as The Wirral, Sefton and Wigan were able to go ahead and place orders for the modern E7, cabbies operating in the city centre were left asking “Why on earth can’t we have this up-to-date vehicle in Liverpool?” It’s the same question put to the Council’s Licensing Committee earlier this year by Glasgow manufacturer Cab Direct, supported by more than 300 Liverpool taxi drivers and by local wheelchair users. The Council’s refusal to grant the E7 a Hackney Carriage Licence is currently being challenged through the courts.
The Ford Journey has been designed to offer an economical multi-purpose taxi at a fantastic price. With easy wheelchair access and huge luggage capacity, the Journey combines all the features required by the modern day taxi driver with versatility that’s second to none.
Ken Winfield from Colchester recently took delivery of his new Ford Journey and he can’t praise the vehicle highly enough. Ken, who previously drove a Peugeot E7, decided that the time had come to semi-retire. So when he was looking for a new vehicle the Journey seemed like the ideal choice. Ken comments: “I couldn’t be happier with the Journey, it really is superb - particularly given the price. And the running costs are excellent too – both for fuel economy and servicing. I wish I had bought one sooner.”
Ken continues: “The Journey is absolutely ideal for what I want. I have various contracts for wheelchair accessible work and the Journey fits the purpose perfectly. All my regular customers love it – I’ve had nothing but positive comments. I really am over the moon.”
With the choice of a one-piece folding rear ramp or adjustable twin telescopic ramps, the versatile Ford Journey can accommodate wheelchair passenger, driver and up to two other passengers. Alternatively, it can carry driver plus four passengers with a huge luggage area. So whatever the job, you can be sure that the Journey will fit the bill.

A businesswoman from Buckinghamshire is launching an online cab directory to help women and other concerned travellers find female taxi and executive hire drivers in the UK. Ladycab.com is the brainchild of Annette Fox, herself a private hire driver, who hit upon the idea after so many of her clients were frustrated at how hard it was to find a female taxi driver.
Wary of high costs of advertising her service and the limited geographic reach, Ladycab was born. The directory, the first of its kind, is free for users. It is funded jointly by low-cost subscriptions from taxi and executive hire companies and by paid-for advertising targeting the website users.
As the dangers of using an unlicensed mini cab are rarely out of the headlines, all companies/drivers have been vetted by Ladycab.com to be valid taxi/private hire licence holders where applicable. But rather than just being a safety issue, it also gives women travellers the freedom of choice when booking a taxi.
Ladycab is aimed at a wide range of demographic groups, but is expected to be weighted heavily towards females between 18 and 60 years old.
Users (travellers) search using a postal district (the first half of a
postcode) or town/city name to obtain a list of up to 10 companies/drivers along with key information to allow them to make a decision. The user then phones the selected company/driver and makes a private booking.
The subscribers will be the providers of taxi and executive hire services, either as companies or as independent drivers. The launch target for Ladycab.com is to have 800-1,000 subscribers covering some 3,000 postal districts. The launch is currently planned for the end of October 2008.
It is estimated that there are around 70,000 taxis in the UK and over 150,000 drivers.
Ladycab wishes to enhance the benefits of being a subscriber beyond just the inclusion in the directory. They are offering a number of commercial opportunities to selected organisations that supply products and services to the taxi and executive hire community, in the form of group discount offers to Ladycab.com subscribers. These offers will be promoted by Ladycab amongst its subscribers through regular email contact and other occasional direct marketing activity.
No finder/arrangement fees will be paid to Ladycab.com.
Ladycab.com will work with participating companies to develop a means of identifying bona fide subscribers when redeeming group discount offers.
Are you a female taxi driver or traveller wanting to know more? Go to www.ladycab.com for further information.

Allied Vehicles, manufacturer of the Cab Direct E7 taxi with tailored wheelchair access, is exhibiting at the Liverpool Taxi and Private Hire Exhibition 2008 at Kings Dock Arena, this week, July 29/30.

Taxi drivers visiting the exhibition will be able to see the E7 up close this week and find out the many other benefits this vehicle has to offer over a conventional TX4 black cab. A lower purchase price, superior fuel economy, longer service intervals and modern design are just some of its key attributes.

The decision was taken to support the event, despite the fact that Liverpool City Council’s licensing committee has refused to grant the E7 a Hackney Carriage licence.

BBC TV Northwest highlighted the case being brought against the Council’s licensing committee by wheelchair user Alma Lunt and Cab Direct over their decision to snub the E7. Disability groups representing thousands of wheelchair users say the E7 offers a far safer and more practical solution to that which currently exists.

The TV footage showed Mrs Lunt take journeys in a London-style black cab and then an E7, to highlight the major problems she faced. Mrs Lunt was securely strapped in to the back of the E7 while facing forward and wearing the correct three-point seatbelt, something not possible to achieve in a London-style black cab.
Liverpool City Council is being taken to the High Court by Mrs Lunt and Cab Direct over its taxi licensing policy. The Liverpool Wheelchair User Group is also supporting the judicial review test case.

Gerry Facenna, Chairman of Cab Direct said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to let Liverpool taxi drivers have the chance to find out for themselves the benefits a more modern and accessible cab offers. With regard to the licensing issue, we’re not seeking special treatment from Liverpool City Council, just a fair opportunity to offer a safer and more convenient solution to the local disabled community. We’re hoping common sense will prevail.”

• Liverpool wheelchair users denied access to modern, accessible taxis
• Research shows many journeys are unsafe for wheelchair passengers
• Allied Vehicles and local disability groups challenge Council taxi licensing ruling

Leading disability groups across Liverpool are up in arms at their City Council’s refusal to license modern hackney taxis that can be safely used by the entire city’s estimated 12,000 wheelchair users.
If the current policy is maintained, many will have to continue travelling in traditional London-style cabs sitting sideways without wheelchair restraints or seatbelts. A judicial review test case has been brought jointly by Alma Lunt, Chair of the Merseyside Coalition of Inclusive Living and Allied Vehicles. Allied manufactures the E7 Taxis that were controversially refused a license for Hackney Carriage use by the Council’s licensing committee in March this year.
Opponents say the Council’s decision flies in the face of its own Disability Equality Statement and is in breach of its duties under the Disability Discrimination Act to make “reasonable adjustments” to council policies and practices, so as to enable disabled people to lead a full life in the community on equal terms.
Allied manufactures a range of wheelchair accessible taxis and is the leading supplier of wheelchair accessible vehicles to the UK Motability Scheme. Its E7 Taxi is licensed in 95% of local authorities around the country, including others in the Merseyside area. Local disability organisations claim the E7 Taxi offers a much more convenient, comfortable and safe transport option for most wheelchair users, particularly those with larger wheelchairs. While it is possible to push a wheelchair into a London-style taxi (the only new vehicle currently available for purchase in Liverpool), limited space in the rear of the vehicle makes it impossible to turn many wheelchairs into a rear facing position where the passenger can be secured.
Mrs Lunt and Allied have put evidence before the court showing the problem to be endemic: a recent study by Lowland Market Research confirms that, in practice, wheelchair users in London-style cabs frequently travel sideways, in an unsecured wheelchair and with no seatbelt. This situation presents a severe risk in the event of an accident, sudden stop or sharp turn.

The Report also shows that in only four out of 100 sample taxi journeys taken in London-style black cabs was the wheelchair turned to face the correct direction of travel. Significantly, an EC directive (2005/39/EC) forbids side-facing seats in any category "M1" vehicles, which includes taxis. By default, many of Liverpool’s wheelchair users have to travel in a manner that would be prohibited were they not disabled.

Modern-style, purpose-built taxis, such as the E7, offer a ready-made and safer solution for disabled users. Because of their larger and all-level rear passenger area, these vehicles make it much more practical to turn and secure a wheelchair passenger, once inside the taxi. Wheelchair using passengers also have the option of facing forward during travel and there is far more space for colleagues, friends, family members or carers to accompany them.

Liverpool Wheelchair User Group Chairman John Bruce is vigorously campaigning with others across the city for increased choice in taxi design. “Most other cities can safely have this taxi, so why not us in Liverpool,” says John. “The layout and facilities of the E7 allow for many more solutions for safe travelling”.

John stresses that the issue is not about driver training and adds: “What cab drivers need is the right tool for safely carrying wheelchair users – that is an alternative taxi.”

The Council claims the wider turning circle of modern cabs would make them dangerous to operate in Liverpool – despite the fact the E7 Taxi operates successfully across most of the UK and in many major cities including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton and Sheffield. The Council also criticised sliding doors on modern hackney cabs as a potential danger – but oddly, is happy to license private hire taxis with sliding doors.

In conclusion, Donald Pow, General Manager at Allied Vehicles states, “We’re not seeking special treatment from Liverpool City Council, just a fair opportunity to offer a safer and more convenient solution to the local disabled community. We’re hoping common sense will prevail.”

UK’S VERY FIRST ELECTRIC TAXI MAKES DEBUT AT THE 2008 BRITISH INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW

• Electric taxi helps cabbies beat rising fuel costs, Vehicle Excise Duty and Congestion Charge costs
• Zero emission taxi is available later in 2008 with lower running costs than a traditional black cab
• Transport for London snubs electric taxi

Taxis will be propelled into a new era at this year’s British International Motor Show with the launch of the UK’s very first electric taxi.

Launched by Glasgow based Allied Vehicles which builds thousands of taxis each year, the new E7 taxi appears in the electric pavilion for the duration of the motor show.

The electric taxi will be available from October 2008 and is the result of three years research and development by Allied, which is already looking for local authority partners to install recharging networks locally to help drive down urban emissions.

However, a recent snub by Transport for London’s taxi licensing division, the Public Carriage Office, means the UK’s first zero emission taxi will not be appearing on the capital’s streets anytime soon.

The E7 is powered entirely by cutting edge Lithium-ion batteries which have been developed and supplied by Europe’s leading independent manufacturer, Dundee based Axeon Holdings plc. These give the electric E7 a range of up to 100 miles from a single charge and a top speed of 60mph.

Producing no carbon, particulates or other pollutant emissions, the E7 is eligible for a 100% discount from vehicle excise duty, as well as lower daily running costs.

With rising fuel prices an increasing problem for taxi drivers, the electric E7 is cheaper to run than a traditional black cab*. Allied’s confidence in the technology is underlined with batteries featuring a six-year warranty and the base vehicle boasting a two-year unlimited mileage Peugeot warranty.

The electric E7 also provides full wheelchair access. Thanks to its large rear-passenger area wheelchair users can enter the vehicle more easily and be turned into the correct position for travel, before being secured safely with high-quality wheelchair restraints and passenger seat belts.

Each taxi is equipped with retractable side-steps and a specially designed, under-floor wheelchair ramp to further improve accessibility for disabled passengers.

The new E7 taxi combines the comfort and safety required by the modern taxi driver including a driver’s airbag, a feature which is unavailable on traditional black cabs.

“Taxis and their drivers have a hard life and with the rising cost of diesel at the moment, it is only going to get worse,” said Gerry Facenna, Chairman of Allied Vehicles.

“For the majority of taxi drivers, the key issue when buying a new cab is usually the cost to run, service and maintain their vehicle. In the current economic climate drivers are looking for ways to reduce costs and electric power offers an ideal solution, especially for congested urban areas where traffic is stop-start for much of the day.

“We’ve had a positive response to electric vehicles from many local authorities, both in the UK and in Europe. However it’s a shame that London looks set to miss out, especially since its famous taxi fleet is currently responsible for 4% of all emissions in the capital,” he added.

The E7 will cost £39,450. To put this into perspective, a London style black taxi based on a TX4 silver automatic is in the region of £35,455 on the road.

ends.

Notes to Editors:
Journalists wishing to drive the new electric Peugeot taxi can do so after the motor show on the 5th of August in London.

*running costs per month for the battery’s electricity are £500 plus VAT. Running cost for a diesel TX4, plus road tax based on 20 miles per gallon is £530 plus VAT.

Allied Vehicles Profile
Allied Vehicles Group was established in 1993 and in 2008 it set up Zero Emission Vehicles to launch its range of electric taxis, vans and minibuses. This follows three years of research and development into Allied manufacturing and selling its own new electric vehicle range.

Allied employs 360 people, operates from a 20-acre manufacturing plant in Glasgow and is the UK’s leading specialist vehicle manufacturer of wheelchair accessible cars, MPVs, mini and midi buses.

Allied is the largest supplier of wheelchair accessible vehicles to the UK-wide Motability Scheme and winner of the Motability Suppliers Award 2008. Through its taxi division, Cab Direct, Allied is also the leading supplier of modern-style hackney cabs to the taxi industry.

Allied has an annual turnover of over £50 million and is constantly evolving to meet the rapidly changing transport requirements for cleaner and more efficient transport solutions. Part of this change has included an additional 98,000 square feet factory adjacent to the existing production facilities which will be utilised in the production of Zero Emission Vehicles.
